Spellbound
This artwork is my interpretation of a landscape near Bathurst combined with the words of Emily Bronte. It is a story from a road trip with my son in June. Travelling from Lithgow to Oberon, we took a short cut through Rydal when a snow storm descended over the hills. We were so surprised and had to stop to watch the fields being transformed into this beautiful snow covered landscape. Lines from Emily Brontë's poem "Spellbound" perfectly captured what we felt on this unexpected adventure.
SPELLBOUND…. Emily Brontë
The night is darkening round me,
The wild winds coldly blow;
But a tyrant spell has bound me
And I cannot, cannot go.
The giant trees are bending
Their bare boughs weighed with snow.
And the storm is fast descending,
And yet I cannot go.
Clouds beyond clouds above me,
Wastes beyond wastes below;
But nothing drear can move me;
I will not, cannot go.

Artist Statement: “Trevone Bay Blues”: This painting is of Trevone Bay, a gently shelving, sandy beach surrounded by cliffs on the Cornish Coast. One of my favourite surfing spots when we go to visit family in the UK. Most of the time it is a stormy, grey and rugged landscape but on this sunny day it was the most intoxicating blue. With our trip to the West Country cancelled this year due to covid-19, I have spent time in the studio exploring the works in my travel journal and revisiting the places I feel sad we won’t be seeing for a while.
